I first discovered the world of CrossFit in 2014 at CF Framingham. My youngest son was two years old, and I was looking for a way lose the remaining baby weight and also to get out of the house and have some adult interaction. In September 2017, I made the move to Pennant, and am so grateful to have found a new home!
What is your favorite movement?
Hmmm . . . That’s a tough one. I tend to like the movements that make me feel strong. So perhaps back squats or bench press. (You know, the ones where you finish and you’re like “yeah, I’m a badass!”)
What is your least favorite movement?
Burpees. I was going to say something about how I get frustrated when the programming calls for a movement that I can’t do (like Muscle Ups, or Double Unders, or Rope Climbs – this list is getting embarrassingly long…) But let’s be honest. It’s burpees.
Tell us a little about your life outside the gym (family, job, hobbies, interests, etc.)
I live with my husband, two sons (ages 7 and 9), and dog in Natick. My boys go to the Fay School, and I spend a significant amount of time volunteering there. Also, doing laundry. And taking Calypso-the-energizer-puppy to the park. Of course, shuttling Monster and Chaos back and forth to school, soccer, karate, and piano lessons. (In fact, I just got my own purple belt in karate last week!) Monitoring homework, practicing, and playdates. Doing more laundry. Making breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Running errands. Running with Calypso. Did I mention doing laundry?
What were you doing before CrossFit?
Throughout my adult life, I have attended a wide variety of gyms, tried innumerable classes, and even worked with multiple personal trainers. For years I ran 20 miles a week and cut carbs almost completely out of my diet. (Thanks to Pennant’s Nutrition Coaches, I now know how counterproductive that was…) But I plateaued about 20 pounds over my goal, and the weight refused to come off regardless of my efforts.
What were your goals when joining CrossFit and how have you achieved those goals?
At first, probably the biggest motivator for me was my two boys. I want to be strong and healthy so that I can be fully present in their lives for many years to come. But I also want to be a model for them so that they know from an early age that it takes time and effort to take good care of your body, but it is incredibly important.
Of course, now I look forward to classes both for the physical workout and for the opportunity to see people who have become friends. What started as a simple need for adult interaction, has led to the development of strong and lasting friendships.
At Pennant, the community atmosphere creates a combination of encouragement and competition that makes me strive to be better each and every class. The coaches provide thorough explanations and thoughtful critiques to ensure that I am reaching my potential in every movement.
In just this past month, I have hit Personal Records in five different lifts. And thanks to Nicole and the Nutrition team, those stubborn pounds are finally coming off. Despite just having a BIG birthday, I have never felt stronger or in better shape!
How has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?
The confidence I have gained through CrossFit impacts all aspects of my life. I believe in my strength. And I know I can overcome challenges if I just keep pushing through. More directly, after a good class, I leave the gym feeling rejuvenated and better prepared to take on whatever life is going to throw at me that day. And if I need a little support, my 8:30 crew is always there to provide it. CrossFit inspires me to be the best version of myself.
What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit or thinking about giving it a shot?
At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, I would say that the strength you will build, both physical and internal, can truly transform your life. I recently heard the saying “A person with health has 1,000 dreams; a person without it has only one.” CrossFit nourishes and strengthens your mind, body, and spirit thus enabling you to pursue your dreams. You owe it to yourself to give it a try!
