When did you start CrossFit and why?
I started CrossFit about 10 years ago at CFNE in Ben Bergeron’s 8:30 class which was mostly stay at home moms but moms who were really fit! I started CrossFit because of my kids attending the kid’s class at CFNE, I would take them to class and watch the adult class after and be amazed by what people were doing. It took me a few weeks to give it a try and I’m so glad I drank the CoolAid!!
What is you favorite movement?
When I was attending only CrossFit classes my favorite movement was the deadlift. Now that I’m attending mostly Bootcamp classes I’d have to say rowing.
What is your least favorite movement?
The bike, I only have one pace and it’s not very fast! When I bike for calories they don’t accumulate very quickly!
Tell us a little about your life outside the gym (family, job, hobbies, interests, etc)
Outside the gym I work at the Massachusetts Medical Veterinary Association, planning conferences, editing and publishing their monthly newsletter and do various administrative tasks. I’m also the mother of a high school junior, Lauren and a son, Ryan, who recently graduated high school and is taking a gap year to play hockey. I spend a lot of time at hockey rinks! Lauren and I also workout together at Evolve Fitness when I’m not at Pennant. I’ve been married to my husband, Steve, for 21 years. I love to read and always have a book with me!
What were you doing before CrossFit?
I worked out with a trainer for a few years after having children, donated to a regular gym that hardly ever went to. I trained for the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco and the Boston Marathon to raise money for pediatric cancer research. I’ve also participated in a few sprint triathlon’s.
What were your goals when joining CrossFit and how have you achieved those goals?
When I first started CrossFit I didn’t really have a goal. I didn’t know what to expect since I’d never participated in many group classes. Since I’ve been at Pennant I’ve set quarterly goals with the help of the coaches, gym and nutrition. This past Spring I committed to myself to get fitter. I worked with Kevin on individual programming and with Nicole on nutrition. I dedicated myself to fitness for 12 weeks. Being held accountable to someone helped me to exceed my goals.
How has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?
I’m much more confident and not afraid to take risks or try something new. Working out also helps me relieve stress and deal with my depression.
What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit or thinking about giving it a shot?
Don’t think you can’t do it, at Pennant you definitely can! The coaching staff is amazing and will help you set and achieve your goals! CrossFit works for any fitness level, all movements are scalable. Take a chance, you’ll be glad you did!
